About The Institution of Engineers
(India)
The Institution of Engineers [India]
is the largest multi-disciplinary professional body of engineers with 15 engineering
disciplines and over 6,00,000 members in India and abroad. The Institution was established
in 1920 and was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1935. It has been in the forefront
of engineering profession addressing the socio-engineering problems for progress
of the country. In order to provide special attention to some of the important issues,
in addition to engineering disciplines, it has established special vehicles of focus.
The Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI), National Design and Research Forum
(NDRF), Rural Development Forum (RDF), Safety and Quality Forum (SQF), Sustainable
Development Forum (SDF) and Water Management Forum (WMF) are six such focussed initiatives.
The Institution is an active player in international arena in engineering field
including being a founding member of World Federation of Engineering Organizations
(WFEO), Federation of Engineering Institutions of South & Central Asia (FEISCA)
and Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC). With its large international linkages
and a network of 99 Centres in India and abroad, the Institution has built up a
wide reach and a large infrastructure to meet its objectives of promoting engineering
in all aspects. The Institution of Engineers (India) obtained the full membership
of the Engineers Mobility Forum (EMF) for India at the Bi-annual International Engineering
Meeting 2009 held at Kyoto, Japan on 17 June 2009. The Engineers Mobility Forum Agreement is an International
Recognition Agreement for Professional Engineers between the engineering organizations
in the member jurisdictions, which creates the framework for the establishment of
an international standard of competence for professional engineering and then empowers
each member organization to establish a section of the International Professional
Engineers (IntPE) Register. The IEI is now authorized to operate Indian Section
of the International Professional Engineers (IntPE) Register. The eligible Indian
Professional Engineers would be placed, after due process, on the International
Register. They would be entitled to exclusively use the title IntPE(India), indicating
their international status. All eligible Indian engineers can now apply for Professional
