Indian Engineers Attain World Mobility


In a landmark achievement, The Institution of Engineers (India) obtained the full membership of the Engineers Mobility Forum (EMF) for India at the Bi-annual International Engineers Meetings 2009 held at Kyoto, Japan on 17 June 2009. The IEI delegation to the meetings was led by Rear Admiral K O Thakare, President, IEI and also included Shri R P Gupta, Immediate Past President, IEI and Cdr A K Poothia, IN (Retd), Secretary and Director General, IEI.


The Engineers Mobility Forum Agreement is an International Recognition Agreement for Professional Engineers between the engineering organizations in the member jurisdictions, which creates the framework for the establishment of an international standard of competence for professional engineering, and then empowers each member organization to establish a section of the International Professional Engineers (IntPE) Register.


Each member organization operates a National Section of the International Professional Engineers (IntPE) Register. Engineers on this International Register receive credit when seeking registration or license in the jurisdiction of another member organization. Engineers on the International Register are free to practice engineering in member countries and are recognized at par local Professional Engineers. The Institution of Engineers (India) had obtained the Provisional Membership of the EMF in the year 2003. Since then, the Institution has developed systems and processes for certifying Professional Engineers to international standards. The systems and procedures, as operated by IEI and other participating professional institutions of India, were witnessed by UK, Japan and Hong Kong as representatives of the world body.

 

The IEI is now authorized to operate Indian Section of the International Professional Engineers (IntPE) Register. The eligible Indian Professional Engineers would be placed, after due process, on the International Register. They would be entitled to exclusively use the title IntPE(India), indicating their international status.

 

All eligible Indian engineers can now apply for Professional Engineer (PE) Certification through IEI only. A rigorous assessment of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD), passing the Assessment Examination and the Peer Review form part of the PE certification process. A major emphasis on CPD, which can be accrued through participation in Seminars, writing and presenting technical papers, etc helps in keeping engineers updated and professionally in-date. The Institution of Engineers (India), with its 99 Centres in India and abroad, provides excellent facilities for CPD to engineers in general and aspiring Professional Engineers in particular.

 

With removal of barriers under the WTO and GATT Regimes, the quality assessment of mobile professionals has assumed very important dimension. With the IEI becoming part of the International Agreement on Mobility, the Indian Professional Engineers would be readily acceptable for practice in foreign countries on one hand, and a system for quality certification of incoming engineers would be easily available for employers in India, on the other. Additionally, the Professional Engineers certified as per international standards would also command higher recognition in domestic market.

The status of IEI as a Full Member of the Engineers Mobility Forum would provide level playing field, mobility and a vast recognition to Indian engineers.
